Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Problem: As the Human brain became more complex, we became self aware. This self awareness allows us to have an unlimited imagination as to how to respond to our surroundings making us extremely adaptable. The problem is we can imagine ourselves behaving anywhere from the way Hitler behaved to the way Mother Theresa behaved toward our fellow humans.
We build theories of how things work and teach our children how to survive. We build cultures that have rules to maintain order in society. These Societies formalize the unknowns into religions so we can have comfort from the unknowns of life. Religions then teach you to obey the rules of society and “God” and receive the punishments for breaking those rules – real (death) now or imagined (Hell) after death.
The Code of Hammurabi, the most complete and perfect extant collection of Babylonian laws, developed during the reign of Hammurabi (1792–1750 bce) of the 1st dynasty of Babylon. It consists of his legal decisions that were collected toward the end of his reign and inscribed on a diorite stela set up in Babylon’s temple of Marduk , the national god of Babylonia.
Down through the centuries we have religious rules, generally the 10 commandments concepts are common to most religions.
So Religion is good since it reinforces the legal codes of the society, maintains it’s humans behaviors and creates peace and harmony among people. It fosters good deeds and charity to our fellow humans.
Clearly human’s need a code of behavior, rules for treating their fellow humans to live in peace for the common good. Realise that Confusious, Jesus, Mohamed and Budha were all wise sages that tried to teach us codes of behavior which would help ourselves and the society we found ourselves in by bringing disipline to our selfish desires to create a fairer and harmonius society.
The question is do we need the imaginary “faith” part of religion, those concepts that are conjured up?
When we have no answer for that five year old’s question – We make up stories rather than say we do not know.
- Where did Grandma go when she died ? ( She went to Heaven )
- Where is heaven ? (Up there with God )
- Where is God ? (Everywhere )
We actually tell our children fairy tales which they eventually realize were lies. (Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Santa Claus)
Poor way to build intergenerational trust
Humans are very uncomfortable with their own Death – So we have a God that offers Eternal life ! Problem Solved !
Questions for you ?
1. Do we need a God to behave correctly ?
2. Do we need Heaven and Hell to modify our behavior ?
3. Can humans accept the human fear of no life after death ?
Humans are pattern recognition machines continuously evaluating whether the next human they meet are friend or foe, wealthier or poorer and religion just seems to be another way to describe a person being in your group or in an outside group. Obviously if someone has a different religion then, they may be more likely to be dangerous to you becouse they may not follow the same rules you have.
Religions of the world are humanities hypothesis on the unknown questions of our existance and place in the cosmos. Since we cannot prove one god over another, all are valid theories on the posible realities of our situation on earth.
Solution: Follow your religions commandments and positive human behaviors toward all humans
- Face the fact that there are many things that are just unknown to us
- Stop lying to your children and making up fairy tales when you just don’t know – tell them the truth.
